This exciting new guide is the ideal companion to Greece if you are a traveler with historical and archaeological interests, as it combines practical information with impeccable scholarly research. Beautifully illustrated with over 200 plates, maps, plans and drawings, this book includes:
* precise descriptions of routes and individual sites
* artistic, historical, social and political background
* unprecedented coverage outside Athens
* detailed exploration of the post-classical, Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods.
Summary: Excellent but too expensive
Rating: 4
An excellent overview of most ancient and some major medieval sites within a day’s travel of Athens, written with unquestioned scholarly competence but clearly enough to be accessible to the nonspecialist. The one thing I missed was a comprehensive map showing all the sites instead of just the major ones, which would make planning a trip easier. Includes an extremely useful guide to the National Museum in Athens. Unfortunately, the publishers have chosen to issue this book at a price which ensures that 99% of the travelers who could benefit from it aren’t going to buy it.
