Summary: Good alternative to the manual
Rating: 4

I bought this book because I am new to Logic Pro and I was very much intimitated by the 2 encyclopedias of info that come with the program. I read this book after already completing about 80% of the Logic Pro manuals, and this book had basically the same info, but in a quicker, more accessible way for a newcomer. It is a great book, but if you have the patience for the included manuals, this book mostly repeats what you find in the Logic Manuals (The author, Orren Merton, even wrote some of the manuals!). Great Book if you are new to Logic, and want a middle ground between the quickstart manual and getting your doctorate in Logic Manual 101.

Summary: Pretty much just a condensed manual
Rating: 2

First, I tried reading the Logic Pro manual…very dry, but pretty good as a reference. Then I bought this book hoping it would help. It did, but not much. It doesn’t really cover much that wasn’t already in the manual. It’s very dry as well.

Also, the included Thomson Course Technology Interactive CD-ROM that has some lessons in Logic was good, but there’s no way to go back 30 seconds in a segment. You can pause, but not rewind to repeat something. You have to go back to the beginning of the segment and they are 10-15 minutes long. They should be in Quicktime format so you can rewind and fast forward through the material and repeat just a bit of it.

I did buy Stephen Bennett’s “Making Music with Logic Pro” after Mr. Merton’s book. THAT book is very useful with tips not in the manual, and seems to cover the things that are more important to you getting up and running Logic. It doesn’t just list things out like a reference manual. He tells you that something functions a certain way and then gives you an example. Much more practical – and enjoyable.

Summary: Great reference book
Rating: 4

Well organized, clear, concise and gets to the important stuff early on.

Summary: Excellent Logic Pro 7 Resource
Rating: 5

The ideal companion to Logic 7 Ignite!, Logic Pro 7 Power! is a powerful tool in unlocking the full potential of Apple’s Logic Pro 7 music production software.
Anyone who uses Logic knows that its depth can be intimidating to the beginner, and its very flexibility can often present the newcomer with an embarrassment of options. Here Orren Merton systematically lays out, in detail, the solutions to achieving the most productive results from Logic, including the mysteries and power of the Environment.
Also included is a liberal supply of tips and tricks that will help shorten the learning curve, and a very informative hour-long Tutorial CD. As a long time user of Logic, I keep this book conveniently to hand in my studio just in case the implementation of one of the new features eludes me or, yes, just in case I’ve forgotten how to use a feature I haven’t used in a while.
All in all, it’s user-friendlier and better laid out than Logic’s unwieldy manual and I recommend it highly.

Summary: The worst of Logic…
Rating: 1

I have used Logic since the “Creator” days (those of you who remember that program are older than you care to admit!), and I use Logic on a DAILY basis as my prime DAW. I love to have as many different perspectives on the subject as possible, so I read EVERYTHING that is released about the program, because I usually find some little gem, some little morsel, that makes that particular read worthwhile…

Not here. This is BY FAR the worst book on Logic out there, and is a TOTAL waste of time. The writer simply redid the manual (which, honestly, now that Apple has taken over, is truly excellent) and crammed it into this poorly written, poorly edited text.

Instead, I would point the motivated user to George Leger III’s DVD on Logic 6 (it is still quite relevant for users of Logic 7) and especially to Martin Sitter’s introduction, and to David Dvorin’s Advanced Logic books; however, if one doesn’t have the cash to spend after spending it on this rather expensive (but HIGH value) program, then read the manuals over and over rather than wasting one dime on this book. Even used it is not worth purchasing…
