I. DVD Contents

The DVD-ROM contains the following media:

Chapters 21-25 of Molecular Biology of the Cell, Fifth Edition
The Art of Molecular Biology of the Cell, Fifth Edition
The Cell Biology Interactive media player
A detailed guide to the items on the DVD can be found in the PDF file “Media Guide.pdf” on the root level of this DVD. The media listed above is located in separate folders, respectively named “Chapters 21-25,” “Art of MBoC5,” and “Cell Biology Interactive.”

II. Getting Started

The Cell Biology Interactive media player can be run directly from the DVD or, for better performance, from your hard drive. With the latter option, the media files (animations, videos, molecular models, and cell images) will remain on the DVD. If you run the Microsoft Vista operating system, you must install the media player application on your hard disk.

RUNNING CELL BIOLOGY INTERACTIVE DIRECTLY FROM THE DVD

Open the “Cell Biology Interactive” folder on the DVD, and double-click on the Cell Biology Interactive application icon.

RUNNING CELL BIOLOGY INTERACTIVE FROM YOUR HARD DISK

Windows:
Locate the SETUP.EXE application in the “Cell Biology Interactive” folder on the DVD. Double-click on the SETUP icon to launch the installer. In addition to copying the applicaton to your hard disk, SETUP will add a shortcut (”Cell Biology Interactive”) to your Start Menu to facilitate access to the content on the CD.

Macintosh:
To install Cell Biology Interactive on a Macintosh, copy the “Runtime - Macintosh” folder, located within the “Cell Biology Interactive” folder, to your Applications folder on the hard drive (select Applications from the Go menu). Be sure to launch the media player from this folder, instead of the DVD, to improve performance.

***IMPORTANT! Cell Biology Interactive requires QuickTime 7 or later and Adobe Flash Player 8 or later. See the link below under System Requirements for information on optaining the latest version of QuickTime and Flash***

III. System Requirements

Windows
1. A PC compatible computer with Pentium or equivalent CPU running Microsoft Windows XP/Vista*.
2. Color monitor capable of displaying at least 16-bit (”thousands” of colors) at 1024 x 768.
3. DVD-ROM Drive.
4. At least 500 Mb of Physical RAM
5. Microsoft’s PowerPoint application is required to view the PowerPoint presentations, and Adobe Reader is required to view Chapters 21-25 and the Media Guide.

Macintosh
1. Apple Macintosh 1 GHz or faster G3, G4, or Intel processor
2. OS X 10.3 or 10.4
2. Color monitor capable of displaying at least 16-bit (”thousands” of colors) at 1024 x 768.
3. DVD-ROM drive.
4. At least 500 Mb of Physical RAM
5. Microsoft’s PowerPoint application is required to view the PowerPoint presentations, and Adobe Reader is required to view Chapters 21-25 and the Media Guide.

IMPORTANT! Many of the QuickTime videos on the MBoC5 DVD include Flash tracks. By default, the ability to play Flash movies in QuickTime is turned off. In order to view the animations, you must enable Flash playback as follows (be sure to install the Flash Player application first; see below under third-party software).

Windows:
1. Launch the QuickTime Player application
2. Choose PREFERENCES–>QUICKTIME PREFERENCES from the EDIT menu
3. Click on the ADVANCED tab
4. Click on the ENABLE PLAYBACK OF ADOBE FLASH TRACKS option under MEDIA TYPES if it isn’t already enabled

Macintosh:
1. select SYSTEM PREFERENCES from the Apple Menu.
2. Click on the QUICKTIME icon
3. Click on the ADVANCED tab
4. If it isn’t already enabled, click on the ENABLE FLASH option

THIRD-PARTY SOFTWARE

Adobe Flash Player
Some of the animations require Adobe’s Flash Player 9 application, which is available for both Macintosh and Windows computers.

Adobe Reader
Chapters 21-25 and the “Media Guide” can be viewed using the Adobe Reader application, which is available for both Macintosh and Windows computers.

QuickTime
The movies require Apple’s QuickTime 7 software, which is available for both Macintosh and Windows computers. You can download the latest QuickTime software from the Apple website:

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

After installation of QuickTime, you must enable the Flash tracks as described above.

IV. Using the Animations, Videos, Molecular Models, and Cell Images in Other Programs

The user has the option of playing the movies within the User Interface, or individual movies may be imported and displayed in other programs, such as a presentation manager, a Web browser, or a media player, such as QuickTime Player.

For this purpose the media has been placed in easily accessible folders on the CD, and labeled by media type. The folders are located in the “media” folder within the “Cell Biology Interactive” folder.

For instructions on importing movies into PowerPoint, please consult the documentation for that program.

For an overview of all contents, we recommend your printing out the “Media Guide” located on this DVD. It contains the text of all voice-over narrations for the movies, as well as credits for the individual scientists and media developers
